Moth damage repair: how eaten wool rugs are restored

Bare patches and thin spots can be rebuilt by hand. Here is how moth damage is repaired and how to keep it from returning.

The short answer

  • Moth damage is repairable. Missing wool can be rebuilt by hand through reweaving and repiling.
  • The order matters: stop the moths first, then repair, then protect against a return.
  • We offer moth eradication, damage restoration and moth prevention.
  • Early repair saves money and protects the rug’s value.

Bald patches, thin spots and tiny trails through the pile are what moth damage leaves behind. If your wool rug has been eaten, moth damage repair can restore it. This guide explains how repair works, what to expect and how to make sure the damage doesn’t come back, in Denver and Austin.

Step one: stop the moths

Repair only makes sense once the moths are gone, otherwise new larvae will simply eat the repair. Clothes moth larvae feed on the keratin in wool, so the first job is removing them. Learn more in our guide to moth extraction. Once the rug is clean and treated, repair can begin.

How moth damage is repaired

  • Repiling restores areas where the pile has been eaten down but the foundation is intact. New wool is added to bring back height and color.
  • Reweaving rebuilds areas where the foundation itself has been damaged or eaten away. See repiling and reweaving.
  • Edge and fringe work repairs the sides and ends, where moths often begin. See binding and serging and fringe replacement.
  • Color matching blends new wool into the surrounding rug.
