Moth damage in wool rugs: signs, prevention and extraction

Moth larvae feed on wool, often out of sight. Learn how to spot the early signs, protect your rugs and stop the damage before it spreads.

The short answer

  • The damage comes from moth larvae, not adult moths. Larvae eat keratin, the protein in wool.
  • Moths prefer dark, undisturbed places: rug edges, undersides and areas under furniture.
  • Regular vacuuming and clean storage are the best defense. Cedar only protects items that are already moth-free.
  • We safely remove larvae and contaminants, then repair the damage and help prevent a return.

Bare patches, thin spots and tiny trails in the pile are the classic signs of moth damage in a wool rug. Wool rugs are an irresistible meal for clothes moth larvae, and the damage can spread quietly for months. This guide explains how to spot moths early, how to protect your rugs and how our moth extraction process in Denver and Austin stops the damage and protects your rug’s value.

How moths damage rugs

Adult clothes moths don’t eat fabric. Their larvae do. According to university extension research, the larvae feed on keratin, the protein found in wool, fur, silk and feathers. Cotton and synthetic fibers are rarely attacked unless they are blended with wool or soiled with food or body oils.

Larvae favor dark, quiet, undisturbed places. That is why damage often begins at rug edges, along the underside and beneath furniture, where the rug is rarely moved or vacuumed. A rug that is walked on and vacuumed regularly is seldom infested.

Damage often starts out of sight, so it pays to look at the edges and underside of your rugs.

Signs your rug has moths

  • Bare or thin patches where pile has been eaten down to the foundation.
  • Silky webbing or small cases stuck to the fibers or fringe.
  • Fine, sand-like droppings (called frass) on or under the rug.
  • Small moths flying near closets, rugs or storage areas.
  • Irregular tracks or tunnels through the pile, often along the edges.

Check the underside and the fringe, and look under the furniture that sits on the rug. If you find any of these signs, contact us early. Moth damage is much easier to fix when it hasn’t spread.

Our moth extraction process

Moth extraction is part of our Rug Clinic Care process, so the rug is treated and cleaned together:

  1. Inspection. We look for active larvae, webbing and damage on both sides of the rug.
  2. Deep dusting. Specialized equipment removes embedded dirt and debris, which also removes much of what moths feed on.
  3. Moth treatment. A targeted treatment safely removes larvae and contaminants to stop further damage.
  4. Deep hand wash and thorough rinsing. A deep water submersion flushes out what’s left, with gentle, eco-friendly detergent.
  5. Controlled drying and conditioning. The rug is dried completely and the fibers are conditioned.

After extraction, we can help with the damage itself. Our rug repair and restoration services include moth damage repair, reweaving and repiling of worn areas, with a special focus on antique rugs.

How to protect your rugs from moths

  • Vacuum regularly, including along the edges and under furniture. Good housekeeping is the main control measure recommended by extension experts.
  • Rotate and move rugs and furniture now and then so no area stays dark and undisturbed for long.
  • Clean before you store. Soiled wool is more attractive to moths, so wash a rug before putting it away.
  • Don’t count on cedar alone. Cedar protects only items that are already free of moths.
  • Ask about prevention. We offer moth prevention treatments that help deter future infestations by protecting natural fibers.

A five-minute moth check you can do today

  1. Lift the edges. Fold back the corners and look at the underside and along the foundation.
  2. Check the fringe and the rug’s border for webbing, cases or droppings.
  3. Look under furniture. Use a flashlight where the rug rarely sees light or foot traffic.
  4. Inspect nearby wool. Check closets and storage areas holding wool clothing or other rugs.
  5. Vacuum the edges and empty the vacuum right away.

How to store a wool rug safely

  1. Clean it first. Soiled wool attracts moths, so have the rug professionally washed.
  2. Dry it completely. Moisture invites mold, which can be a second problem.
  3. Wrap it breathably. Use cotton or similar breathable material instead of sealed plastic, which can trap moisture.
  4. Store it off the floor somewhere clean, dry and ventilated, and check it from time to time.

Prefer not to store it yourself? We offer secure, climate-controlled rug storage designed to protect fibers, dyes and structure.

Repairing moth damage

Once active moths are gone, the damage can often be repaired. Depending on the rug, that can mean reweaving and repiling worn or eaten areas, rebuilding edges and replacing fringe. Repair preserves the rug’s structure and its value, so it is worth getting an assessment before the damage spreads. For rugs with significant value, ask about a documented appraisal as well.
